The short version
- Scatters count wherever they land: no payline is needed to start the round.
- 26 of the 44 slots in our spec file mention free games; 6 say the round can be extended.
- In a pick-a-mode round you choose the version of the feature before it starts; 2 titles in our file offer one.
- Free games inside a slot are not the same as free spins from a coupon, which carry their own wagering and cap.
- Scatter trigger. In Shadow Gods, 3 or more Mask scatters anywhere start the feature. No payline is needed.
- Pick a mode. The player chooses Wild Reels or Treasure Spins: two versions of the same round with different extras.
- Free games. Each mode gives 6 free games, per Springbok's Shadow Gods preview.
- Retrigger. Landing the trigger again during the round adds 6 more games.
How scatters set off the round
Most symbols pay only when they sit in the right place: along a payline, or in a run of adjacent reels on a ways game. A scatter ignores all of that. Once the reels stop, the game counts the scatters showing anywhere in the window, and if the count reaches the number in the pay table, the free games begin.
That number is set game by game. Springbok's Shadow Gods preview asks for 3 or more Mask scatters, while the lobby tile for Olympus Thunderhold wants 4 or more Zeus scatters. Some games also limit where a scatter may fall: Springbok's review of Coyote Cash 2 says its scatters must appear on reels 1, 3 and 5.
The trigger is decided in the same instant as the rest of the spin, by the same random draw. It cannot be stored up, and a long wait does not bring it any closer: the chance of the next spin starting the feature is the same after fifty empty spins as it was after a lucky one.
| Game | Trigger and round, as published | Published by |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow Gods | Free Games on 3+ Mask scatters: choose Wild Reels or Treasure Spins (6 free games each, retrigger +6) | Springbok's preview |
| Olympus Thunderhold | 10 free games on 4+ Zeus scatters, +5 on 3+ during the feature | Lobby tile |
| Coyote Cash 2 | 9 free games on 3 scatters (reels 1, 3, 5) with low-paying symbols removed | Springbok says |
| Elemental Adventures | 8 free games on 3+ Wild Scatters, with morphing symbols | Lobby tile |
| Planet Of The 'Roos | 3+ 'Roo Palace scatters trigger up to 10 free games; an oversized scatter on reels 2-4 can add 5 more | Springbok says |
| Big Cat Links | 3+ scatters trigger up to 20 free games, with 5 extra games for each further 3 scatters | Springbok says |
| Panda Magic | 3+ scatters trigger 20, 25 or 30 free games with all wins doubled | Springbok says |
| Vegas XL | 3 vault scatters trigger free games with multipliers, retriggerable up to three more times | Springbok says |
These are examples from the slots in our spec file, not a complete list of the lobby's 244 slots. Notice how much the round size varies: some games state an exact count, some a range, and some only an "up to" ceiling.
What changes once the free games start
A free-games round is seldom the base game replayed at no cost. Designers nearly always change one rule for its duration, because the feature carries a large share of what the game pays back over time. On the slots in our spec file, those changes fall into three families.
Multipliers
Wins inside the round are multiplied. Olympus Thunderhold's tile says its multiplier symbols, 2x–100x, are added together and appear in free games only. Seahorse Surge pairs stacked wilds with wild multipliers from x1 to x5.
Extra wilds
More wilds complete more lines. Shadow Gods builds a whole mode around them, Wild Reels, and Meerkat Misfits' tile describes free-game stages with multiplying wilds of up to x4.
Different reels
The reels themselves change. Coyote Cash 2 strips out the low-paying symbols, says Springbok's review, and a Springbok article gives Buffalo Mania: Thunder Springs 1,024 ways, up to 16,807 in free games.
None of these extras lifts the return a game was built to pay over the long run. They decide where in a session that return tends to arrive. When a big part of it sits inside the feature, the base game between triggers has to pay less to make room, and that trade-off is much of what the lobby's volatility label sums up (how volatility shapes a session).
Retriggers: how a round extends itself
A retrigger adds games to a round that is already running, usually because the trigger symbols land again during the free games. It is the main reason two rounds of the same feature can end up very different lengths.
The rules differ more than the word suggests. Springbok's Shadow Gods preview adds 6 games each time. Olympus Thunderhold's tile sets a lower bar inside the feature than outside it: 3 or more scatters add 5 games, against 4 or more to start. Springbok's review of Big Cat Links adds 5 games for each further 3 scatters, and its review of Vegas XL says that round can retrigger up to three more times.

Examples from Springbok's lobby tiles and reviews, read 9 October 2026, not a complete list.
Many rounds limit the extra games or the number of retriggers, and some reviews give only the maximum: Springbok's Triple Tigers review mentions up to 60 free games. An "up to" figure is the most a round can reach, not a length to expect.
Pick-a-mode rounds: Wild Reels or Treasure Spins
Some games ask you to decide before the free games begin. In Shadow Gods (Springbok's press release says it arrives on 14 October 2026; it was not in the lobby when we checked on 9 October 2026), the preview says the Mask scatters lead to a choice between Wild Reels and Treasure Spins, with 6 free games either way. Count Spectacular is an older take on the idea: a Springbok article says the Count landing on reels 1 and 5 offers a choice of 12 free games with triple prizes or 4 re-spins.
In most pick-a-mode games the options trade how often the round pays against how much: one leans on steadier, smaller wins, the other saves its value for fewer, larger ones. Whether Shadow Gods is built that way is not published. Springbok's preview names the two modes and their length, and gives no return figure or hit rate for either, so there is no published basis for calling one the better pick.
Free games in a slot vs free spins from a coupon
The two names get swapped all the time, but they are different things. Free games are part of a slot's design: the reels award them during play, and their wins count the same way as the spin that started the round. Free spins from a promotion are a bonus Springbok gives you, tied to one game and to the bonus rules in its T&Cs.
Springbok's terms set out how those promotional spins are treated, and the rule is stricter than many expect.
Free-spin winnings must be wagered 60x the initial free-spins value in ZAR; at most 5x that value can be withdrawn; free spins are tied to one game Verified, 9 October 2026
A round the slot awards by itself carries only the rules already attached to the money you were playing with. Springbok's monthly free-spins coupon, while one is current, is shown below with its game, wagering and cap.

Free games, your budget and the Buy Feature
With so much of the return packed into the feature, the stretch between triggers often feels lean. Budget as if the round may not come at all.
A few games let you pay to skip the wait. Olympus Thunderhold's lobby tile lists a Buy Feature at 100x the bet, and Bass Baggin' Bounty's tile names a Buy Feature too. Buying turns many small stakes into one large one: at an example stake of R2 a spin, a round priced at 100x costs R200 in a single tap, and the round it buys can return less than that.
While a bonus is active, Springbok's T&Cs cap each bet at R100 T&Cs. The terms do not spell out whether a feature purchase counts as one bet, so the cautious reading is to keep its price under that cap.
If waiting for the feature has become the reason you keep spinning, take a break. Free, confidential help is on 0800 006 008 or WhatsApp 076 675 0710, and the responsible play page explains the limits Springbok lets you set.
