The short version
- Paylines: set paths across the reels. Only symbols lying on a path count.
- Ways: matching symbols on neighbouring reels, any row, starting from reel one.
- Of our 44 spec sheets, 27 count on paylines, 13 on ways and 3 pay anywhere or in clusters.
- More ways mean more frequent, smaller wins, not better odds.
- A fixed line. A set path across the reels. Symbols count only if they sit on one of the game's lines.
- Line count. Crimson Castle plays 10 paylines, per Springbok's lobby tile.
- Ways. Matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left count in any row. Two kings on reel 2 make this win count twice.
- The maths. Three rows on five reels give 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243 combinations, the 243 ways on Triple Tigers.
How a payline slot counts a win
A payline is a fixed route across the reels: straight along the middle row, a V, a zigzag. The game's help screen draws every one. A win needs matching symbols on consecutive reels along one of those routes, starting from the leftmost reel, and normally only the best combination on each line is paid.
Lines also build the bet. On a classic payline game, the stake is a bet per line multiplied by the number of lines. Crimson Castle plays 10 lines, so R0.20 a line comes to R2 a spin. Line wins are quoted as multiples of the line bet, which is why top awards on these games read "the bet per line" (how to convert that to your total stake).
Fixed and variable lines
Springbok's lobby tiles tell the two apart. Megasaur lists 25 fixed lines, so every line is always in play. Cash Bandits 3 lists 25 variable lines, so the game lets you choose how many to cover. Playing fewer lines lowers the cost of a spin, but it does not buy a better return; it only leaves routes uncovered that could have paid.
How a ways slot counts a win
A ways slot drops the routes. A symbol on reel one, followed by the same symbol anywhere on reel two, then anywhere on reel three, forms a win. The number of ways is simply the number of positions on each reel multiplied together.
3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243 ways · 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 1,024 ways
When a symbol lands more than once on a reel, the win counts once for each combination. One king on reel one, two on reel two and one on reel three make 1 × 2 × 1 = 2 winning ways, so the same three-of-a-kind is paid twice. That is the situation drawn on the right of the plate.
How a ways game prices a spin varies. Some quote wins against the total bet; others quote them per way, as Springbok's review does for Panda Magic, whose top award is 2,000x the bet per way. The game's help screen gives the exact rule, because Springbok's tiles do not.
243 ways slots at Springbok
Five reels of three rows is the most common ways layout among the games we hold specs for. These are the 243 ways slots at Springbok in our file, examples rather than a full list:
7 of the 44 slots in our spec file use 243 ways
- Triple Tigers
- Coyote Cash 2
- Prosperity Pots: Lucky Coins
- Sweet 16
- Plentiful Treasure
- Mighty Drums
- Vegas XL
Examples from Springbok's lobby tiles and reviews, read 9 October 2026, not a complete list.
| Game | Lines or ways | Volatility |
|---|---|---|
| Mighty Drums | 243 ways | Low |
| Triple Tigers | 243 ways | Medium |
| Coyote Cash 2 | 243 ways | Medium |
| Vegas XL | 243 ways | Medium |
| Plentiful Treasure | 243 ways | Medium |

| Sweet 16 | 243 ways | High |
From Springbok's lobby tiles, read 9 October 2026. Examples, not a complete list of the lobby's 244 slots.
The same count covers very different games. Mighty Drums carries a low label and Prosperity Pots: Lucky Coins a high one: the counting rule tells you how wins are found, not how often or how large they are. For a low-volatility ways game in detail, see the Mighty Drums spec page.
A Springbok press release describes Prosperity Pots: Lucky Coins as a payline game, while the lobby tile and Springbok's review both say 243 ways. We follow the tile and the review.
Bigger counts, connecting ways and pays anywhere
Lines and 243 ways are the two common rules, but Springbok's lobby uses several more.
| Rule | What counts | Titles on file | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paylines | Matching symbols along a set path from reel one | 27 | Crimson Castle, Cash Bandits 3 |
| 243 ways | Neighbouring reels from the left, any row, on a five-by-three window | 7 | Triple Tigers, Mighty Drums |
| 1,024 ways or more | The same rule on taller reels: four rows on five reels give 1,024 | 4 | Panda Magic (1,024 ways), Buffalo Mania Deluxe (4,096 ways) |
| Other ways counts | "Connecting ways" counts the tile names without explaining the layout | 2 | T-Rex Lava Blitz (178 ways), The Cash is Right (259 ways) |
| Pays anywhere or clusters | Enough matching symbols anywhere on the window, or touching groups | 3 | Olympus Thunderhold, Dr. Winmore |
A ways count can also change during play: a Springbok article describes Buffalo Mania: Thunder Springs as 1,024 ways, up to 16,807 in free games. Pays-anywhere games drop position altogether. Olympus Thunderhold's tile says it pays for 8 or more matching symbols anywhere on its 6×5 window, so neither lines nor reel order matter.
Lines and ways side by side
| Question | Payline slot | Ways slot |
|---|---|---|
| What has to match? | Symbols on consecutive reels along one set path | Symbols on consecutive reels from the left, in any row |
| How is the stake built? | Bet per line × number of lines | Usually one stake per spin; the help screen says how wins are quoted |
| How are wins quoted? | Multiples of the line bet | Multiples of the total bet or of the bet per way |
| What does a busy screen mean? | Only symbols on a line matter | Repeated symbols on a reel multiply the ways paid |
| Springbok example | Crimson Castle, 10 lines | Triple Tigers, 243 ways |
Does more ways mean better odds?
No. More ways make it easier for symbols to connect, so ways games tend to show more frequent small wins, but each combination pays less to keep the total in line with the game's RTP. A 243-ways game and a ten-line game with the same RTP hand back the same share of stakes over the long run; they only package it differently.
What changes is the feel. Ways games light up more often, which can make a session look busier than the balance suggests, and a win smaller than your total bet still leaves you down on the spin. Watch the balance, not the celebrations. How evenly a game spreads its return is a separate matter again, covered in the volatility entry.

Triple Tigers
- 243 ways
- Medium volatility
Triple Tigers counts its wins in 243 ways with a medium volatility label, and Springbok's review adds Cascading Multiplying Wins in its free games. Watch a three-of-a-kind across the first three reels: wherever the symbols sit in their columns, it pays, and a doubled symbol on one reel doubles the ways paid. Springbok review
